Min-Jung Kim and Ho-Suk Lee win over 1.500
meters
Korea dominates on first competition day
06/03/2009 - On the first day of the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating
Championships in the Ferry-Dusika-Stadium in Vienna, everything was
perfect for the Korean athletes in the 1.500 meters-race. Min-Jung Kim
in the men's final and Ho-Suk Lee for the ladies won the first titles
of the event.
In a thrilling men's final, Korean Ho-Suk Lee and his compatriot Yoon-Gy
Kwak finished first and second. J.R. Celski from the United States of
America finished third. His teammate Apolo Anton Ohno was in a good
position for the Gold medal for a long time, but finished only fourth.
After the final, Ohno seemed a bit annoyed. "Everything looked
perfect, but in the end, more would have been possible. I hope to find
my rhythm for the next races."
In the ladies final, Min-Jung Kim (Korea) won the title ahead of Yang
Zhou (China) and Sae-Bom Shin (also Korea). Hot favourite Wang Meng
from China had bad luck: The defending champion finished first but was
disqualified later.
Also the semi-finals for the ladies relay over 3.000 meters took place
today.
